The LES 2012 Pan European Conference took place in Rome from Sunday, June 10th to Tuesday, June 12th. It was a great event that attracted IP practitioners and industry professionals from all over the world by giving them an ideal forum to meet, network, exchange points of view and experiences, and promote the understanding protection of IP.

A truly remarkable event attracting almost 400 IP practitioners and industry professionals from all over the world.

The Conference's theme was "Intellectual Property: a tool for economic growth in the third millennium". Internationally recognized keynote speakers discussed the importance of IP Rights as a driver for economic growth and development.


Conference Program

The Conference started on Monday 11th with a roundtable discussion on how IP could support business. The panelists were Ms. Loredana Gulino, Director General of the Directorate General for the Fight against Counterfeiting-Italian Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Antonio Campinos, President of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, Mr. Jorge Avila, President of the Brazilian Patent & Trademark Office, and Mr. Richard Flammer, Principal Director in charge of Patent Information at the European Patent Office.

They discussed the various strategies that their organizations have adopted to improve innovation and foster IP filing in their regional areas.

On the second day of the conference another roundtable took place, this time focusing on one of the most innovative industries: ICT. Major corporations, such as Microsoft, Sony, Nokia and STMicroelectronics, presented their ideas on "How to compete using IP".

In addition, notable representatives from Nestlè, Coca-Cola and Philip Morris presented their branding strategies, whilst Mr. Ted Shapiro General Counsel of Europe - Motion Picture Association discussed the importance of copyright in the audio-visual sector.

Mr. Moretti Polegato, who was also among the important speakers, presented the interesting business case of Geox, the number 1 footwear brand in Italy and 2nd worldwide in lifestyle, casual footwear.

During the afternoon, around 20 workshops were held on different topics ranging from patents and trademarks, to licensing and IP law.


Social Events

After an intense day of discussions and workshops, the participants had some amazing social events to look forward to in the evening. On Monday the Gala Dinner took place at the beautiful 15th century Tor Crescenza Castle. The following day, a private visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel was arranged for all the attendees and their accompanying guests, followed by a spectacular dinner on the terrace of the Vatican Museums. A memorable experience for all the participants.
